5th & 6th Class study Astrology with NUIG professor!

4th, 5th and 6th class students were very fortunate to have Professor Michael Redfern from the Centre of Astronomy, School of Physics, NUIG, come to our school last week to speak with them about our solar system. The children heard all about ‘the world’s biggest eye in the sky’, an extremely large telescope that is currently being constructed and is expected to come into operation in 2015-2020 time frame. Maybe one day a student of Castledaly will study Astronomy in NUIG.

Carol Singing & Christmas Child

On Friday the 17th of December 2010 the children made their yearly trip to Golden Island Shopping Centre with Ms. O’Connell and Miss Corbett. It was a great success. They raised €410 for the school. We would like to thank everyone who came to support us.

Each year we participate in the Christmas Child Shoebox collection initiative and our pupils are always very generous in their response. Here we have a selection of photos to show you the results of their efforts. Many thanks to everyone for their support.

Visit from Irish Parks & Wildlife Services

On Friday November 5th we had a visit from Rebecca Dobson of the Irish Parks & Wildlife Services. Our junior classes met some mini-beasts and discovered just how they manage without a backbone. They also got an opportunity to use a microscope and see wasps, spiders and dragonflies up close. BT Young Scientist Awards here we come!!

Rebecca took our senior classes on a “virtual trip to the bog” where we learnt about the plant and animal life specific to this local habitat. The star attraction was Ireland’s only carnivorous plant – The Sundew.

Senior Tour 2010

2nd – 6th Class recently went on their annual school tour, this time to Lough Key Forest Park. It was a brilliant day out. Everyone (teachers included) tried their hand at the Boda Borg. It was challenging but very interesting. Then we toured the Lough Key Experience where we completed the treetop walk and took photos from the viewing tower. Afterwards, we wound down the day playing in the Adventure Kingdom. We stopped in Supermac’s in Roscommon on the way home where we enjoyed our burgers and chips very much!

Photos from the day can be viewed here and downloaded here.
