5th & 6th Class study Astrology with NUIG professor!

4th, 5th and 6th class students were very fortunate to have Professor Michael Redfern from the Centre of Astronomy, School of Physics, NUIG, come to our school last week to speak with them about our solar system. The children heard all about ‘the world’s biggest eye in the sky’, an extremely large telescope that is currently being constructed and is expected to come into operation in 2015-2020 time frame. Maybe one day a student of Castledaly will study Astronomy in NUIG.

Atlantic Corridor Midlands Schools Competition ~ Living Things

Here are some photos of the Junior entry to the Atlantic Corridor Midlands Schools Competition. We had great fun learning about and compiling our entry.

We learned about Living things and Non-living things.

  • We went on a mini beast hunt.
  • We learned about habitats
  • We made our own habitat.
  • Worms and spiders and snails live in our garden.

We hope you like it.

Carol Singing & Christmas Child

On Friday the 17th of December 2010 the children made their yearly trip to Golden Island Shopping Centre with Ms. O’Connell and Miss Corbett. It was a great success. They raised €410 for the school. We would like to thank everyone who came to support us.

Each year we participate in the Christmas Child Shoebox collection initiative and our pupils are always very generous in their response. Here we have a selection of photos to show you the results of their efforts. Many thanks to everyone for their support.

Wag the Dog

This is our project on levers that we are submitting to the Midlands Primary School Science Competition under the category of Energy and Forces.

Visit from Irish Parks & Wildlife Services

On Friday November 5th we had a visit from Rebecca Dobson of the Irish Parks & Wildlife Services. Our junior classes met some mini-beasts and discovered just how they manage without a backbone. They also got an opportunity to use a microscope and see wasps, spiders and dragonflies up close. BT Young Scientist Awards here we come!!

Rebecca took our senior classes on a “virtual trip to the bog” where we learnt about the plant and animal life specific to this local habitat. The star attraction was Ireland’s only carnivorous plant – The Sundew.

Green Flag Committee

Our Current Green Flag Committee is made up of:

  • Jordan Nugent
  • Alan Henson
  • Jack Kearney
  • Calvin Farrell
  • Daniel Heavin
  • Matthew Duffy

These lads are keeping us on our toes and have just started work on Kilcleagh’s fourth Green Flag. The theme is transport so expect to see more pupils cycling or walking to school with safety. The boys are helped by Miche Scholte with this new project. Miche works as a Travel Education Officer with An Taisce and will be visiting our classrooms on Friday Oct15th and Friday Nov12th. The boys are also very busy making sure that we all remember the Green Flags we have already achieved. So litter bugs, water wasters and energy guzzlers – all beware!!!

Other Environmental News

On Friday November 5th all classes will be visited by the Irish Parks and Wildlife Services. We will be hearing exciting new facts on Minibeasts and Irish Bogs.

Senior Tour 2010

2nd – 6th Class recently went on their annual school tour, this time to Lough Key Forest Park. It was a brilliant day out. Everyone (teachers included) tried their hand at the Boda Borg. It was challenging but very interesting. Then we toured the Lough Key Experience where we completed the treetop walk and took photos from the viewing tower. Afterwards, we wound down the day playing in the Adventure Kingdom. We stopped in Supermac’s in Roscommon on the way home where we enjoyed our burgers and chips very much!

Photos from the day can be viewed here and downloaded here.
