New pupils starting school

Starting School

Starting school is a big milestone in the life of a child and we try and make this transition as smooth and easy as possible for both children and parents.

Sometimes parents are unsure whether their child is ready for formal schooling and so we have listed below the most important skills a child should have as they enter Junior Infants.

They should be able to:

  1. Manage their belongings
  • Put on/take off and hang up coat
  • Open & close lunchbox
  • Place books in bag

(Junior Infants workbooks are large therefore a good sized schoolbag is essential).

  1. Share / Take turns
  2. Use toilet independently
  3. Listen attentively for brief periods and follow simple instructions
  4. Play and mix with peers
  5. Communicate well and speak in an audible voice.

Parents can help their child adjust to and flourish in school by:

  1. Showing a positive attitude towards learning
  2. Encouraging them to talk about their work and offering praise and encouragement.
  3. Listening to their child and bringing any worries/difficulties to the attention of the class teacher as early as possible.
  4. Reading to them.
